The Sjór story

The sea, or sjór in the old Norse language, has provided both vital nutrition and culinary delights. In Sjór we are proud to carry on this seafood legacy.
Three generations carrying the tradition forward: Olav Senior, Olav Junior and young Bjørnar.

For generations, the Norwegian coast has provided some of the world’s finest seafood. At Sjór -a name derived from the old Norse word for “the sea”- we continue that tradition, combining family-owned farming expertise, advanced technology and a deep commitment to quality.

As an integrated sales company within the Bremnes Seashore Group, we collaborate directly with farmers known for fish welfare, responsible production and continuous innovation. Together, we deliver salmon renowned for its purity, consistency and exceptional quality.

Through long-term partnerships, product development and a strong service mindset, Sjór provides reliable solutions tailored to customers around the world.

This is why our partners trust us, and why Sjór is the natural choice for high-quality seafood.

To understand who we are and how we work, it helps to see where Sjór sits within the Bremnes Seashore Group, and where our fish is raised.

Bremnes Seashore operates fish farms, smolt facilities, harvesting and processing plants along the west coast of Norway. This fully integrated structure gives Sjór direct insight into every step of the value chain, from roe to ready product, ensuring full traceability and consistent quality for our customers.

From our sales office in Bergen and close cooperation with the entire farming and production network, Sjór connects this coastal heritage with global markets.

Our roots run deep along the Norwegian coast

The story behind Sjór began long before salmon farming existed. On the island of Bømlo, generations of the Svendsen family have built their lives around the sea. They fished, traded, processed seafood and created work for the local community. Everything was done with their own hands, from building quays and boathouses to developing new ways of handling fish.

Hard work, precision and responsibility were a way of life.

A family shaped by innovation long before the word became popular

Through the mid-1900s, the family worked with whatever the sea offered: lobster, herring, mackerel, cod, crab and the locally important “pigghå” fishery. Each season demanded new skills, new solutions and a deep respect for the ocean.
When challenges appeared (storms, fires, shifting markets) they rebuilt, adapted and moved forward. Innovation was not a strategy. It was survival, curiosity and pride.

From a small quay to a growing seafood company

In the 1960s, the family began farming rainbow trout, and by around 1975 they had expanded into Atlantic salmon. These early steps into aquaculture marked the beginning of a new chapter for the company.

Through the 1970s and 80s, the family began modernising their operations. They expanded processing facilities, introduced freezing technology and joined forces with local partners. This period marked the transition from a traditional coastal fishery to a professional seafood company, one that would eventually become part of Bremnes Seashore.

Opportunities grew, and so did the responsibility. The family travelled the world to learn, to understand new markets, and to meet customers, from Asia to South America, from Europe to Australia. Everywhere they went, one thing stood out: Norwegian seafood had a unique potential.

When salmon farming took hold, the family saw the future

By the 1980s and 90s, salmon farming had become central to the company’s growth. The family recognised early on how farmed salmon could transform the industry when handled with care and competence. Investments were made in licences, new sites and modern facilities, including what would become one of Norway’s most advanced processing plants.

With each generation, the business grew but the values stayed the same: craftsmanship, integrity and a commitment to doing things properly.
